Betaine Anhydrous (TMG) v. Betaine HCl?

Well, crap! I just realized I purchased a whole kilo of Betaine HCl instead of Anhydrous.
Can I use one in place of the other?
If so, what ratio would I use (i.e. 2.5 g TMG = ??? g HCl)?
If not, anyone want to buy a kilo of Betaine HCl?

Trimethylglycine itself is about 117g/mol. An extra HCl adds 37g/mol. So 2.5g Anhydrous would be about 3.3g HCl.

Betaine HCL does have some gut effects too though… Like increased stomach acid production. I would look into that and be mindful if that stuff becomes an unwanted effect with that size dose

Yeah, I’ve been reading that it’s pretty acidic. I have a history of reflux; so not sure if it is worthwhile to even try. I can’t find much info on whether or not it can be a “drop in” replacement for TMG,either.

It can, but it might exacerbate the acid reflex if you take too much.

Maybe neutralize it with baking soda?

That may not be a bad idea. 1 kg is a lot to toss out.

I went ahead and bought some TMG. I’m not going to bother messing with the HCl. Anyone want it before I toss it out?

I would probably, but I’m sure shipping that much would be more expensive than me just ordering some on amazon!

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking

Actually, I think it might fit in a Small Flat Rate Box (USPS), which is $7.20 shipping.
