Why Supplement Packaging Matters: Protecting Capsules, Powders, and Gummies from Moisture, Oxygen, and Light

A new article in partnership with Anxine is up on the blog, this one covering supplement packaging science from the machinery side. Anxine is a pharmaceutical and nutraceutical packaging equipment manufacturer out of China that reached out about a guest post. We turned it into our own piece instead.

The article covers the three main environmental threats that degrade supplements after manufacturing:

  • Moisture - hygroscopic powders cake, capsule shells soften, tablets swell. Induction seals and properly-sized desiccants matter more than most brands acknowledge.
  • Oxygen - lipid oxidation in omega-3s and fat-soluble vitamins happens before you smell anything. Nitrogen flushing at fill and Alu-Alu blisters are the main controls.
  • Light - riboflavin and folate degrade under retail lighting. Clear PET bottles offer zero protection.

There's also a section on matching packaging format to product type. For instance, powders, capsules, and gummies each have different failure modes and different minimum protection requirements. That's where Anxine's packaging equipment lineup gets introduced naturally: blister packers, pouch filling and sealing systems, and bottle-line induction sealers. Two PubMed studies cited, including a 2022 oxidation assessment of commercial omega-3 supplements on the French market.
